Abstract
Purpose: In the study, the physical and optical characteristics of ophthalmic hydrophilic contact lens polymerized with addition of magnesium phathalocyanine in the basic hydrogel contact lens material were evaluated. Methods: Ophthalmic copolymer containing HEMA, NVP, MMA was coplymerized with the cross-linker EGDMA and the initiator AIBN. Also, the physical and optical properties such as refractive index, water content, spectral transmittance, tensile strength and contact angle of produced contact lenses were measured. Also, the physical and optical characteristics of the produced polymers were analyzed to investigate the UV&IR-blocking capabilities of these functional ophthalmic dyes and their applicability as materials for tinted ophthalmic hydrogel contact lenses Results: The measurement of physical characteristics showed refractive index, water content, UV-B transmittance, contact angle and tensile strength were in the range of 1.4328~1.4330, 38.53~39.34%, 33.8~65.5%, and 0.2790~0.3137 kgf, respectively. The transmittance for UV light was reduced significantly in combinations added magnesium phthalocyanine and iron (II) phthalocyanine. The addition of magnesium phthalocyanine and iron (II) phthalocyanine was also shown to increase the contact angle of hydrogel contact lenses, compared to the reference sample. Conclusions: The polymer containing iron (II) phthalocyanine and magnesium phthalocyanine is expected to be used as a material for UV-block hydrogel contact lens without affecting refractive index and water content.
